The vision and mission of the Visual Arts Mosaic Gallery

Mosaics are not commonly seen today in local and well-known art galleries. However, the Virtual Gallery of Mosaics aims to bring back its popularity. Mosaics are apart of Roman cultural history, filling up the walls and ceilings of several ancient buildings and homes. The creation of mosaics has since then died down with only a few artists taking an interest. We would like to present the world of mosaics and the beauty of being able to utilize different styles and textures. As an artist, you can create a mosaic by taking tiles and hand painting them before piecing them back together. Other styles include colored and dyed stones/rocks being constructed to make an image.  Modern artists see art as simple paintings, whether it be abstract, realism, impressionism, etc. However, mosaics may also represent these types of art.

One of the overall topics that this gallery focuses on is the meaningful moments of life. The artist that focuses on this Atsuko Lakaris. Mainly, in her artwork, she uses pieces of glass to show a bigger picture of the different moments. For example, her use of children captures details of a general childhood, which goes to reflect how beautiful small moments of life are to a person that is observing, though the person experiencing this event might not think of the event as significant. Atsuko Laskaris plays a part in portraying the beauty and the awe-inspiring aspect of mosaics, which goes to help draw attention to this type of art.

Mosaic artists are extremely dedicated to using different materials available to them to make their art pieces. For some, their mosaics are almost like paintings, in which the image being relayed uses materials to relay a realistic piece. Mia Tavonatti is one of these artists. Despite her side works of contemporary art, the majority of her mosaics make up images of humans, of buildings, or of the ocean. They aren’t made in a cartoon style but using the dyed glass, they look like still pictures. She enjoys using nature complementing humane beauty in her works, such as Svelata and Glory, where the audience can see flowers and the ocean enwrapping beautiful women.

To artists, their inspirations to create art vary from the simplest to the most complex of ideas. Artist Tami Macala’s inspirations stem from her desire to give beauty to otherwise everyday objects, and like many artists, she conveys such through her work. How they choose to convey their ideas heavily depend on their choice of medium. The Mosaic Gallery displays the artworks of very talented artists who use the medium of mosaics with varying styles and choices of themes.
